A low stool in solid white oak, built on four half-lap joints and nothing else — no brackets, no plates, no hidden fixings. The joint is the structure, and it is the mark on the underside.
18 inches to the seat, which is stool height rather than chair height: it works at a bench, as a side table beside a low chair, or as the thing that ends up holding books.
It arrives assembled. Solid timber joined properly does not want to be a flat pack, and a stool you have to build is a stool that loosens.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Construction
- Four through half-laps, drawbored and pegged in oak — glued, but the pegs would hold it if the glue failed. Seat is a single quarter-sawn board, not a lamination. Edges hand-eased, so nothing is sharp at the back of a knee.
- How it ages
- The oak lifts from pale gold to honey over the first two years and keeps going more slowly after that — direct sun accelerates it and does so unevenly, so move it occasionally if it sits in a window. The oil finish wears thinnest where you sit; a coat every couple of years puts it back. Expect the seat to pick up small dents. Oak takes them and they darken in.
- Material
- Solid American white oak, quarter-sawn seat; hard-wax oil finish
- Finishes
- Natural oil, Smoked
- Weight
- 4.8kg. Heavy enough to stay where you put it, light enough to carry one-handed.
- Made
- Cut, joined and finished in a workshop in Vermont.
Dimensions, in inches
| Height | Width | Length |
|---|---|---|
| 18 | 13 | 11 |
Height is the floor or surface to the highest point. Width and length are the widest points across and along. Anything round states a diameter instead. Tolerance is a quarter inch on a machined dimension and half an inch on anything turned or thrown.
Care
- Wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry it after.
- Re-oil with any hard-wax oil when the surface stops beading water — roughly every two years.
- Never leave standing water on the seat.
Cautions
- Not a step stool. It is 18in high and not braced for someone standing on the edge — the Step Stool is.
- Not for outdoors. Hard-wax oil is an interior finish and oak greys quickly in weather.
- Rated to 120kg seated, centred.
- Smoked oak is fumed, not stained, and the colour varies board to board.
