Four things you
cannot undo.
Almost everything here is looked after with a damp cloth and, once every year or two, a coat of oil. There are exactly four instructions that matter more than that, because ignoring them destroys the piece rather than marking it. They are first.
Nothing oiled goes in a dishwasher
The board, the bowl, the tray. A dishwasher will split solid timber and no oil finish survives one. This is the single most ignored instruction on the site and the only one that destroys a piece outright.
The wool cushion cover is dry clean only
Woven lambswool at 420gsm felts in a machine. A felted cover has shrunk and hardened and cannot be brought back. Air it instead — most of what a cushion picks up is smell, not dirt.
Never wash or dry clean the waxed tote
Either one strips the wax permanently. Brush it dry, spot clean with cold water, and re-wax it every couple of years with any cotton wax dressing.
Stoneware is not frost proof
Water trapped in an unglazed foot expands and splits the piece. Do not leave the vase or the pillar holder outdoors over winter.
Everything else, by material
Solid oak and ash
Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it after. Re-oil with any hard-wax oil when the surface stops beading water — roughly every two years on furniture, yearly on a board or a tread that gets used. Oil goes on thin: more coats, not thicker ones.
Washed linen
Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. A short tumble on low and then a line gives the best hand. No fabric softener and no chlorine bleach — oxygen bleach is safe on the oat and clay colourways.
Lambswool
Air it rather than washing it. Comb pills off in the first month rather than shaving them — it is short fibre working its way out of a new weave and it stops on its own. Store it with moth protection over summer.
Stoneware
Hand wash. It is dishwasher safe but the unglazed foot absorbs detergent, so hand washing keeps it cleaner. For a pillar holder, twenty minutes in a freezer releases set wax in one piece.
Unlacquered brass
Wipe and dry — brass water-spots. Polish with any brass polish if you want it bright, or leave it and let it brown. Never put it in a dishwasher: the detergent stains it black in a way polishing does not lift.
Waxed cotton
Brush off dirt when dry, spot clean with cold water only. Re-wax when it stops shedding water. Store it open and dry rather than folded flat.
When something goes wrong
Solid timber and fired clay can almost always be put right, which is most of the reason to buy them. Ask before you replace anything.
A ring or a heat mark on an oiled top
Water rings usually lift with a light abrasive pad and a fresh coat of oil. Heat marks are harder and sometimes permanent — hard-wax oil resists water far better than it resists heat, which is why the coaster line is on the side table page.
A dent in oak
A damp cloth and a warm iron will steam most dents back out of solid timber, which is a thing veneer cannot do. Re-oil the spot afterwards.
A loose peg or a joint that has moved
Email us. The joints here are drawn and wedged rather than glued alone, so almost anything that has moved can be re-wedged rather than replaced — tell us whenever it happens, inside the returns window or years outside it.
A crazed glaze
A fine network of lines in a glaze over time is a glaze-to-body fit thing and is cosmetic: the stoneware body underneath is vitrified, so it still holds water. If a piece ever actually leaks, that is a fault and we will replace it.
Every dimension
The same figures that appear on each product page, in one place, so you can compare two pieces without opening two tabs. All in inches. Height is floor or surface to the highest point; diameter replaces width and length on anything round.
