A finger-jointed oak box with a loose lid — 12 by 8 by 5 inches, which is the size that takes everything a hallway or a desk accumulates without becoming furniture.
The lid has no hinge. A hinge on a box this size is the part that fails and the part that stops the lid being useful as a tray.

- Construction
- Through finger joints at all four corners, cut on a jig and left proud then planed flush, so the end grain shows on both faces. Base is a solid panel housed in a groove and left floating so it can move. Lid is a single board with a rebated lip that locates inside the walls.
- How it ages
- The end grain in the finger joints darkens faster than the faces, so the corners become more visible over the first year. That is the joint doing what it is meant to do.
